There are some races that make you go “Yea!” and others yet that make you jump for joy. This was a mix for both. I set out with a plan to do a 21:30 so I can increase my VDOT training, but scratched that when the snow came. There was a TON of snow out there, the roads were slush and ice. Not good conditions for a PR. Got my normal routine in, got there with my father in law, met up with Lynn G. , Benjamin D. & Holly (who opted out smartly) and got in a warmup on the course. I shaved my expectations back to a 27:00. The course and wind was just nasty. Then something fun happened. I put my music on, zoned out and just ran…

Chatting it up with Ben (orange head warmer) and Lynn (blue fleece) prior to the race. Shortly after this photo Ben noticed Lynn didn’t have here timing chip!

The start was weird, wet and icy…and the snow started falling harder.

Mile 1 6:55

The first 1/2 mile was downhill then a short level then downhill again. Went thru a neighborhood that went backup a hill towards the end. Feeling good, saw a fellow GVH runner and tucked in behind him. My thumbs were frozen (no gloves) due to running head-on into the wind, I could not feel them at all.

Mile 2 7:21

The course flattened out and I don’t know why this was my slowest mile, but I remember having trouble getting grip. About the end of mile 2 I had feeling in my thumbs again. Only passed by a couple runners at this point.

Mile 3 7:05

The third mile felt really good, I hadn’t maxed out my HR at all and I had a lot of energy left, used it to get back up the hill towards the end and pass a couple runners.

2nd runner I passed going uphill, hit my HR max right about here but I felt great.

Finish :51 (6:39) 22:09

Overly ecstatic about my finish and feel I reached my goal despite the weather. The course record was a 15:48 on a good day, the leaders came in at 17:25. I figure if they were able to run 16 on a good day, then I probably could have shaved off the less than 15 seconds per mile that made my goal. So now I am moving on up to VDOT 46!

Splits pace: 6:52 /7:20/7:05/.1 6:33
Finish time: 22:09 PR! former road 5K 25:45 (I think on dry road this would be below my planned 21:30)
43/231 place (6/12 Age group)

…somedays you just let your body do what it wants to do. I had energy left over, and never hit my HR max until the last half mile. IT was a fun race despite the weather. AND BIG CONGRATS to Lynn who got 3rd in her AG!
